What is the CPB Sight Word Relay?
The CPB Sight Word Relay is an interactive sight word game built on the first 100 Children’s Picture Book (CPB) sight words: the words young readers meet most often in the books they actually read.
Children find the target word among look-alike cards (like them, then and they), so they have to look closely at every letter. Every word is recorded, so children can hear each one as they play.
This game uses the CPB (Children’s Picture Book) Sight Word List developed by Green, Keogh, & Prout (2024).
Two ways to play
👥 Two or three teams
A fast, fun classroom race on the interactive whiteboard.
- Two or three teams see the same word. It flashes while it’s read, then Go! appears, and only then can the players tap: no guessing ahead.
- Race to tap the matching card.
- The fewer tries it takes, the more points the team earns.
- Listen & find for teams: the word is hidden and said twice. Teams find the word they heard, and it appears once they tap the right card.
- When every player finds it, the next players come up. Press pause while they swap.
- Stop at any time to show the final scores.

Everything you need, nothing to prepare
- All 100 CPB sight words, set out in four lists of 25.
- Choose a whole list, or tap individual words to build your own practice set.
- Three levels: 3, 4 or 5 answer cards. More cards make it trickier.
- Look-alike answer cards, so children read the word rather than guess.
- Every word recorded. Choose Word to hear each new word twice, or Spell & say to hear it spelled out, then read (T-H-A-T… that), or Listen & find to hide the word so children hear it and find it.
- Play in list order or mixed up.
- Works on interactive whiteboards, computers, tablets and phones.
- Designed for whole-class, small-group, one-to-one or home use.
🔊 Good to know: Listen & find works for one player and for the team games. It always says the plain word, so the spelling doesn’t give the answer away.
