What is the CCVC Quick-Fire Relay?
A fast, whole-class team race through the same bank of CCVC words. Split the class into two or three teams: each team gets its own board, the word is said twice, a whistle blows, and the first team to get it right wins a bonus star.
The game follows the PDF stage by stage:
- Find the Picture: hear the word, then find its picture.
- Hear the Blend: listen to the blend, then find it on the cards.
- Choose the Blend: choose the beginning blend for each picture.
- Connect the Sounds: join the blend to the ending to make the word.
- Match the Word: join each word to its picture.
- Word Relay: look at the picture and listen, then find the word.
- Words Relay: just listen, then find the word: no picture to help (a new extra stage in the game).
Two formats in one package
🎮 Interactive game
Play in the classroom or at home, on the whiteboard, a computer, a tablet or a phone.
- Two or three teams: every team plays the same words on its own board. The first team to finish gets a bonus star, and ⏯ pauses the game while the next players come up.
- One player: the same slides on one board, with gentle feedback and no timer.
- A results page shows the points, the words right first time and the words to practise.
Everything you need, nothing to prepare
- 72 CCVC words in 8 sets: L-blends, R-blends, S-blends and digraphs with pictures, then W-blends and three more blend sets as word relays.
- Choose your words on the Master Card: whole sets, or single words from across the sets to make your own list, and pick the stages you want.
- Hear every word: the word is said twice at the start of each round, Hear it again repeats it, and you can tap a picture to hear its word.
- Tap, then tick to check: green for correct, red to try again.
- Points on screen for every answer right first time, a bonus star for the first team to finish, and a results page with the words to practise.
- Mute button for quiet rooms, and Full for full screen.
- Bright clay-style pictures children love, on the whiteboard, computers, tablets and phones.
🔴 Good to know: the first two letters (the blend or digraph) of every CCVC word are shown in red, matching the rest of the Phonics Playmakers CCVC resources.
